"Hangover", "Earl", "Iron Man", and other celebrity cars hitting the auction block

It is fun to own famous cars. While the enthusiast world is still holding its breath for some ultra-rare gems (the Bullitt Mustang comes to mind,) there are a few slightly more obtainable Hollywood cars coming to the Mecum Spring Classic Auction next week.

The Hangover
turned the W111 Mercedes Cabriolet from grandpa’s favorite drop-top into a modern guy’s night icon. Now two well-heeled bachelors (or bachelor wannabes) will be able to cruise the local strip in an actual movie car. Both of the “beauty” cars from the flick will be crossing the auction block. The first is a 1965 220 SE convertible.  This one was lucky to escape most of the punishment the other Merc convertibles took in the flick, but there may still be a few interior scratches – this is the car that transported Mike Tyson’s tiger.  A second undamaged car my be the true gem.  It is a 1969 280 SE (the movie's two W111 Cabrios appear similar despite the different ages.)  Not only does it have the larger engine with about 40 more horsepower, but the interior also didn't earn its tiger stripes.

On the other end of the sophistication scale is the 1973 Chevrolet El Camino featured in the TV show My Name is Earl. While the price for a dented and mis-matched El Camino is usually measured in cases of beer, this one is likely worth a little more.  Even without the celebrity power, this El Camino has genuine muscle from its original 454 big block V8 that is listed as, “maintained in peak running order.”

Other celebrity cars at the Mecum auction will include three races cars built for the Charlie’s Angles movie. The tube chassis racers are powered by mid-mounted Chevrolet ZZ4 crate engines and automatic transmissions by Trans Axle Engineering. Two 427 Shelby Cobra Kirkham Body Shells from the movie Iron Man (one damaged during filming) are also up for sale.

The Mecum Spring Classic Auction starts next Wednesday (May 19), but the celebrity cars will not begin crossing the block until Thursday.
