Evel Knievel exibit opens at the Harley-Davidson Museum

The Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is on almost every motorcycle fan’s must see list. While the museum features two wheels less than what most of our reader’s care about, there is a special exhibit featuring a favorite of every gearhead: Evel Knievel.

The late Robert Craig “Evel” Knievel was a big boost to Harley-Davidson 1970s. The company made sure he was known for riding their products during the height of Knievel’s popularity.   So from now until September, H-D’s museum has a full exhibit with its own separate building on the museum grounds devoted to the daredevil.

True Evel: The Amazing Story of Evel Knievel displays much of what made this jumping man famous. Besides some of his motorcycles, the exhibit features items like his F1 dragster, jumpsuits, interview clothes (that could be described as pimp-like), and X-rays representing Knievel’s record of broken bones. The exhibit even has the infamous X-2 Skycycle that was used in the 1974 failed jump attempt over the Snake River Canyon.

A few hands-on displays allow visitors to play with some of the many toys produced during Knievel’s constant promotion. There’s also a video game where participants can choose how many big rig trucks or shark tanks they want the virtual Knievel to jump (HINT: he usually doesn’t make it.)

What is possibly one of  the most interesting parts of the exhibit is the explanation of how Knievel became “Evel”. A wall display gives six different justifications for the nickname that suggests everything from Knievel’s attitude as a child to a jailhouse rhyming scheme.

Inside the spotlight Knievel was a daredevil and a role model, but his legend outside the limelight was built on his bad financial decisions and even worse temper. While it is hard to tell his story without visiting both sides, in the end, it is evident the Evel Knievel temporary exhibit at the Harley-Davidson Museum tends to recognize more of the hero. Viva Knievel!
